Ski bums welcome! The hotel’s rooftop bar and observation deck has transformed into a retro Alpine hideaway.

NEW YORK, NY Pow pow wow! This winter, take the lift straight to the (roof)top and shred some gnar cocktails. The Runway Chalet at The Pool Bar— a toasty 1960s ski lodge-themed getaway — has opened on the roof of the landmark 512-room TWA Hotel, the only on-airport hotel at JFK International Airport.

Pull on your best Penny Pitou sweater and come swishing down for some après ski! The Runway Chalet at The Pool Bar — operated by Gerber Group, which also operates The Sunken Lounge and Connie at the TWA Hotel — serves food and drinks to rippers and bunnies alike. Make like Jean Vuarnet, assume the egg position and tuck into charcuterie with artisanal cheese and fig marmalade or a sizzling burger. Leave your poles at home, brah, but bring your bathing suit: The water in the pool-cuzzi hits 95 degrees or higher every day — and there are no moguls in our terrain! (You may get hit with an over the head face shot, though, so wear your snorkel.)

The tented and heated bar — outfitted with enough retro skiing gear to make Jean-Claude Killy proud — offers peak views of Runway 4 Left/22 Right. Zig zag over to the vintage fireplace (complete with electric logs) and watch planes head cross-country as you smash an Idlewild Hot Toddy: Sailor Jerry spiced rum and hot apple cider garnished with a cinnamon stick. Or stomp a real trick — hot chocolate with a kick! The Weather Delay adds Belvedere vodka and marshmallows to the wintry mix.
It wouldn’t be the 1960s without fondue so the hotspot offers both chocolate and Vermont cheddar varieties. Dip into a pot of cheese, then dip into the pool, where you’re sure to experience a watershed (slalom) moment à la Billy Kidd: It’s all downhill from here.

The mountain report calls for the Runway Chalet at The Pool Bar to be open from 11 AM to 11 PM daily, with all trails groomed and ready for plane spotting from our sick JFK cornies. When you’re ready for an altitude adjustment, point your tips toward the Runway Rink for some freestyle ice skating. Open daily through the end of February, the Runway Rink also offers free ice skating performances (visit twahotel.com/rink for times).
