Jon Rahm: “I am honoured to launch this golf tour for children and to be part of this great opportunity of promoting our sport. I have said many times that Seve means everything to me, he was my hero and he is a truly indisputable benchmark in Spanish golf. I took up golf thanks to Seve; he inspired me to be where I am today, so I am proud and excited to share this initiative that bears his name. We have selected an enjoyable format because we want the kids to have fun and want them to come back. A very special thank you to Javier, Miguel and Carmen for their support, for including me in this project, and for making another dream come true. Best of luck to all the participants and see you in December!”
Javier Ballesteros: “One of the key objectives in our father’s career was promoting golf. Carmen, Miguel and I are most grateful to Jon for joining this project. Jon is doing incredible things in golf and we are delighted to share with him this initiative that would make our father proud. The aim of Seve & Jon golf for kids is to introduce golf to children, to inspire them, and to teach them the values of sport following the example set by our father and by Jon. We are really excited by this unique project.”

A stunning start to the year at the 2nd Messinia Pro-Am in Costa Navarino
Professionals and golf enthusiasts from 23 countries renewed their meeting for the next Messinia Pro-Am on 20-23 February 2019
The 2nd Messinia Pro-Am at Costa Navarino was successfully completed with a total of 44 teams from 23 countries and 4 continents. The tournament, which took place February 21-24, also launched the tourism season in Greece.
44 professionals and 132 amateur golfers enjoyed sunshine and lush Messinian surroundings, playing golf amongst hundred-year-old olive trees at the award-winning signature golf courses, The Dunes Course and The Bay Course, with stunning views of the Ionian Sea and the historic Bay of Navarino.
Hosted at The Westin Resort Costa Navarino, the 2nd Messinia Pro-Am showcased strong competition, which led to impressive results, including two hole-in-ones from Stuart Boyle (PGA Great Britain & Ireland) and John Radzioch (German amateur).
Achilles V. Constantakopoulos, Chairman & CEO of TEMES SA, developers of Costa Navarino, welcomed golfers at the tournament: “We are thrilled to see that the second edition of our international golf tournament had such high participation. It is our hope and aspiration to establish a high-level annual event which will give participants from all over the world the opportunity not only to play at IAGTO’s ‘European Golf Resort of the Year 2017’, but also to discover the region of Messinia. Greece has the potential to become a leading international golf destination and we make every effort to move in this direction.”
The action officially launched on February 22, and the following day, the tournament was enriched with the “Rock ‘n’ Roll” Charity Night, during which participants enjoyed bowling and dance, while donating to SOS Children’s Villages Greece. For those who still wish to contribute, please visit the link at the Messinia Pro-Am website.
On February 24, the winners of the tournament were awarded at the glamorous Gala Dinner. The memorable evening, which was presented by actors Manos Gavras and Elena Charbila, had a special surprise for all: a live performance by Boyzlife, the duet formed by the famous British pop singers Brian McFadden (Westlife) and Keith Duffy (Boyzone).
The tournament was highly competitive with a number of fluctuations at the golfers’ ranking, up until the last minute. Ultimately, the German professional Philipp Mejow (PGA Germany) was crowned champion of the 2nd Messinia Pro-Am, leaving Israeli Asaf Cohen (PGA Israel) in 2nd place, after a hotly contested playoff. Third place was shared between Christos Nikopoulos (PGA Greece) and Stuart Boyle (PGA Great Britain & Ireland).
“I am so happy and proud because I put in a lot of work during the winter,” said Mejow. “It’s been a long time since I won my last tournament, so I’m really happy to begin the season like this. I will try to be back next year, because Costa Navarino is one of the most beautiful places I know.”
In other categories, on the last day of the tournament, Austrian Gunther Ausserdorfer stood out for the best performance at The Bay Course and, respectively, Romanian Ciprian Zavloschi for best performance at The Dunes Course.
Messinia Pro-Am was organized in collaboration with PGAs of Europe, an Association of 35 National PGAs (32 European and 3 international) with a collective membership in excess of 21,000 golf professionals, committed to the advancement of golf, golfers and the golf profession across Europe. The Association is also a partner in Ryder Cup Europe as the sole member of the Ryder Cup European Development Trust, and is widely acknowledged as a lead body in the delivery of golf development expertise on a global basis through its collaboration with The R&A in its “Working for Golf” programme. Germany’s Martin Kaymer, the last entry to the Andalucía Valderrama Masters hosted by the Sergio García Foundation to be held at Real Club Valderrama from October 19-22 sponsored by the Autonomous Government of Andalusia, joins a list of Major winners featuring José María Olazábal, Sergio García, Padraig Harrington and Danny Willett.
The two-time Major winner returns for the second successive season to one of his favourite courses “one of the most iconic golf courses in Europe”. Last year he challenged for the title entering the final round one shot off the lead, but eventually finished for a share of sixth place as Englishman Andrew Johnston lifted the Open de España title.
He was also tied sixth at the 2007 Volvo Masters; he finished 21st at the 2010 Andalucía Valderrama Masters and 23rd the following year as he celebrated the victory of his good friend Sergio García, next week’s defending champion and tournament host.
Kaymer is a self-declared lover of Spain – including Iberian ham – and has often expressed his admiration for the prestigious southern Spanish layout: “If there is one course I can play for the rest of my life it would be Valderrama – it’s so pretty. But you should never underestimate this golf course. It is a tricky golf course that you need a lot of respect for. The greens are very small so it is all about ball striking – it is never going to be a putting competition. You have to be very strategic and I really enjoy that. I’ve done well here in the past too, so those are all good reasons to come back.”
Martin Kaymer (Dusseldorf 28/12/1984) turned professional at age 20 in 2005. His 23 professional wins include two Majors, the 2010 US PGA Championship and the 2014 US Open, as well as the 2014 The Players Championship, the flagship event of the PGA Tour. In 2010 he was crowned Europe’s number one and he led the Official World Ranking for eight weeks in 2011.
The four-time Ryder Cup player – winner in 2010, 2012 and 2014 – famously sank the all-important putt for Europe in Medinah. “Olazábal came up to me on 16 and said, ‘Martin, we need your point, but do not know how… win it!’ And I did. This is a feeling that’s not describable,” he recalls.
Besides Kaymer, a strong field of European Tour champions will challenge for the title, including Jamie Donaldson, Niclas Fasth, Anders Hansen, Peter Hanson, Padraig Harrington, David Howell, Raphaël Jacquelin, Andrew Johnston, Robert Karlsson, Søren Kjeldsen, Shane Lowrie, Matteo Manassero, Edoardo Molinari, James Morrison, Thorbjørn Olesen, Renato Paratore, Andrés Romero, Julian Suri, Romain Wattel, Danny Willett…
15 Spanish players will make up the home contingent for this third edition of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters: Pep Anglés, Jorge Campillo, Alejandro Cañizares, Nacho Elvira, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, Sergio García, Pablo Larrazábal, José María Olazábal, Adrián Otaegui, Marcos Pastor, Carlos Pigem, Álvaro Quirós, Jon Rahm, Eduardo de la Riva, Samuel del Val.
