Christie’s is pleased with the results achieved for the palimpsest of a Qur’an copied onto a Christian text, realising £596,750 during the Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds Including Oriental Rugs and Carpets auction, which is still ongoing.
As Lot 1 of the sale, this remarkable manuscript dates to the earliest period of Islam. The leaves from these folios derive from an earlier Coptic manuscript containing passages from the Book of Deuteronomy, which is part of the Torah and the Christian Old Testament. It was very probably produced in Egypt, home to the Coptic community, at the time of the Arab conquest.
This appears to be the only recorded example of a Qur’an written above a Christian text, and the importance of this manuscript resonates with the historical reality of religious communities in the Near East and as such is an invaluable survival from the earliest centuries of Islam. Christie’s is honoured to have offered it at auction in London.
This remarkable discovery was made with the help of French scholar Dr. Eléonore Cellard, as the folios are in fact a palimpsest, a manuscript from which the first writing has been effaced so that the vellum could be reused. Beneath the Arabic script an original Coptic text may clearly be seen.

Marbella Design, the first international design fair in Spain, will take place from April 5th to the 9th at the Palacio de Ferias, Congresos y Exposiciones in Marbella
The programme of talks will bring together Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum of London; Teresa Sapey, architect and designer; Frank Stephenson, considered one of the best car designers in the world; Borja Borrero, publicist; Sara Miller, journalist, The Wall Street Journal; Óscar Mariné, graphic designer; and Dionisio González, artist.
Design for life is the first edition of the programme of talks organised within Marbella Design, featuring seven prestigious international speakers that will approach the concept of design from the perspectives of architecture, objects and art. Alejandro Zaia, president and director of the fair, commented “a fair dedicated to design was the natural evolution of the great success we have enjoyed with Art Marbella, which celebrates its fourth edition this year. With Marbella Design we pioneer in Spain the latest trends in the world of design and contribute to their awareness at the highest level through the Design for Life programme.”
“Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that s why it is so complicated.” Considering this reflection from historic American designer Paul Rand as a starting point, the session, presented and moderated by journalist Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, is divided into three sections, architecture & design, objects & design, and art & design.
The director of the Design Museum of London, Deyan Sudjic, will be the first speaker of the architecture & design panel. Sudjic is one of the sharpest analysts of the changes that are transforming the world. He was architecture critic for the English newspaper The Observer, director of the Italian magazine Domus, and curator of the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2002. In addition, in 1983 he co founded, together with Peter Murray and Simon Esterson, the monthly architecture magazine Blueprint. Teresa Sapey will be the second presenter in this section. In 2002 Sapey opened in Madrid the studio that carries her name, characterised by accepting creative challenges in all ambits, highlighting her work in re designing so called no places , urban transit spaces such as parking areas, bridges, walkways or plazas built initially without a design plan. The great architect Jean Nouvel referred to Teresa Sapey as Madame Parking for her artistic contribution to the parking lot of the Silken Puerta de América Hotel in Madrid.

The second section, under the title, will feature considered one of the best car designers in the world. Stephenson is the creator of iconic models such as the BMW X5, the new Mini, the Fiat 500 and revolutionary vehicles like the McLaren P1. Currently he has created his own brand of innovative designs for a wide range of products and is a design consultant for many companies.

He will be followed by Spanish publicist Borja Borrero, Executive Creative Director of Interbrand for EMEA & Latam, responsible for key projects like re positioning leading brands such as Movistar, DIA or Iberia. Finally, the prestigious English journalist Sarah Miller will complete this segment dedicated to objects. Miller was Editor in Chief of Conde Nast Traveller UK during 16 years, and is currently Luxury Brand Ambassador for The Wall Street Journal (Europe), in addition to CEO of Sarah Miller Partners, a brand strategy and content agency.
Art & design is the last section of the programme, which will bring together Óscar Mariné and Dionisio González. Mariné is one of the most acclaimed Spanish graphic designers and communicators, recipient of the 2010 National Design Award. His internationally renowned work includes iconic designs for filmmakers like Pedro Almodóvar, Julio Medem and Alex de la Iglesia, as well as the San Sebastián Film Festival. Since 2005 he is responsible for the artistic direction of C Photo International Magazine, the most prestigious photographic art magazine in the world, published by Ivory Press. Dionisio González is one of the top Spanish photographers. His work is exhibited at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, and the National Centre for Contemporary Art in Paris. In his series he reflects on life in a contemporary city, the ways of living in the 21st century, and the relationships between mankind and the environment.
The first edition of Marbella Design will showcase approximately 50 exhibitors. Major international brands will be on display like Fendi Home, Trussardi Home and Bentley Home, alongside renowned designers like Pedro Peña and José Antonio Flores (Aalto). The fair will be a meeting point for young designers, and will include spaces for galleries and artists with design projects and objects.
