ANTONY GORMLEY’S A CASE FOR AN ANGEL POISED TO SET AN ARTIST AUCTION RECORD

ALSO FEATURING: HURVIN ANDERSON, PETER DOIG AND
JENNY SAVILLE

Christie’s will present Antony Gormley’s A Case for an Angel I (1989, estimate £5,000,000-7,000,000) as a highlight of Christie’s Frieze Week Auctions. Poised to set an auction record for the artist, Antony Gormley’s A Case for an Angel I is a magnetic and imposing presence, resplendent with an 8.5-metre wingspan. British artists will form a focal point of Christie’s Frieze Week Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auctionon 6 October 2017, which will also feature masterworks by major figures, including Peter Doig, Hurvin Anderson and Jenny Saville. This autumn season will bring together a number of key works that demonstrate the power and far reaching impact that British art had in the 1990s and beyond. These will be on view from 30 September 2017 at Christie’s King Street.

Katharine Arnold, Head of the Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction: “Antony Gormley has pioneered a poignant type of sculpture reflecting upon the balance of human aspirations versus our physical limitations. A Case for an Angel I (1989) is the original articulation of this concept, configured in the 1:1 size of the artist’s body and with an 8.5-metre wingspan, the sculpture creates a vast optical horizon. We expect the sculpture, which prefigured the artist’s landmark sculpture the Angel of the North at Gateshead, to perform at the highest levels. This October we are also showcasing the best of 1990s painting, from Jenny Saville to Hurvin Anderson who is a nominee for this year’s Turner Prize. Hurvin Anderson’s paintings perfectly capture the elegiac quality of memory and the brilliant colours of his compositions leave you feeling like you have just stepped out of a dream. I am always struck by how extraordinary the surfaces of Jenny Saville’s paintings are. Saville is the champion of the unconventional subject. Through her masterful use of paint she showcases the ‘surprising’ aspects of human beauty.”

Christie’s And Andreas Siegfried Present Tropicana: An Exhibition Of New Work By Anton Alvarez And Jonathan Trayte, 13-22 September 2017

Christie’s And Andreas Siegfried Present Tropicana: An Exhibition Of New Work By Anton Alvarez And Jonathan Trayte, 13-22 September 2017

CHRISTIE’S AND ANDREAS SIEGFRIED
PRESENT TROPICANA
AN EXHIBITION OF NEW WORK BY
ANTON ALVAREZ AND JONATHAN TRAYTE

London – Christie’s and Andreas Siegfried will present Tropicana, an exhibition pairing works from the multi-faceted practices of Anton Alvarez and Jonathan Trayte at 103 New Bond Street, timed to coincide with London Design Festival. A tropical landscape of sculptures and furniture, made specifically for the space, will run throughout the gallery, set amongst dense foliage. Relying heavily on the use of colour, both Trayte and Alvarez will combine work to create a vivid conversation, taking inspiration from the nature of an equatorial climate and some of the cultural influences from the vast and vibrant region. Heightened colours and contrasts not only serve as surface but are a significant consideration when forming the structural elements of Alvarez’s machine wrapped constructions and the marble/granite combinations of Trayte’s sculptural tables and painted bronze lamps. This will be a striking display of works set in a carefully curated environment of rich vegetation. The exhibition takes place from 13 to 22 September 2017 and is included in Mayfair Design District, a programme curated by Achille Salvagni as part of the London Design Festival.

Cristian Albu, Senior Specialist and Director, Post-War and Contemporary Art, Christie’s, London: “Youth culture provocateurs, Anton Alvarez’s and Jonathan Trayte’s practice oscillates between expression and constraint, technological innovation and traditional craftsmanship. Joining disparate materials, such as wood, steel, thread, concrete, marble, to name just a few, unconventionally beautiful results are born from the novelty of their techniques. Their work is at once futuristic, pop, and ancestral.”
