Ibiza Bohemia

An Eccentric History
Painter Grillo Demo, shown here at his home, Villa Favorita, has lived in Ibiza since 1978. In Ibiza Bohemia, he reflects about his early years on the island: “In those days, we didn’t come to Ibiza for holidays; we came to Ibiza to change our lives. We didn’t know what we were going to do, but we knew we were going to do something different.”

Pictured here is the home of Anne Sijmonsbergen, author of Eivissa: The Ibiza Cookbook, and her husband, René. This year, the destination draws another culinary import in the form of Nobu Matsuhisa, whose first European resort opens this month in Talamanca Bay, with 152 rooms, four restaurants, and a pool bar. Food here will range from composed Mexican dishes and Mescal-themed drinks at Peyotito to gluten-free salads and smoothies at Celicioso—and Japanese fusion at a namesake Nobu outpost.

Rooms With a View

Rooms With a View
Interior designers have often found inspiration in Ibiza’s sweeping landscapes and saturated colors, which makes for plenty of alluring vacation homes like this one. The most luxurious rentals are available through such specialized companies as Unique Properties & Events, rather than Airbnb, which has a corner on more affordable rooms on this island. But don’t overlook traditional hotels; promising, new options seem to be opening by the minute. The clifftop Seven Pines Resort, with 123 suites tucked into a handful of whitewashed bungalows, opens this fall with rooms similar to the one shown here. And the 38 sultry, gray-blue rooms at Sir Joan offer a stark contrast to the building’s exterior, which gleams like a tower of white Jenga blocks laid on its side.

Natural Beauty
Much is said about Ibiza’s beautiful crowd, but the beautiful architecture deserves attention, too. Eivissa, the island’s Unesco-protected main town, has buildings that date as far back as 654 B.C., and its prevailing aesthetic takes cues from its history: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors, and Spaniards all lived here. The bougainvillea that drapes the many lime-washed walls only adds to the architectural appeal.
